Bitumen Mastic

Bitumen Mastic is mixture of bi,tumen, mineral fillers and fine agreegates. Bitumen Mastic is a voidless mass. The consistency of mastic is such that it flows like a highly viscouse fluid at a temperature of about 200°C but on cooling down it becomes hard. It is impermeable, durable and highly resistant to deformation.

USES

Bitumen Mastic is a homogeneous mortar and has the ability to self heal cracks and avoid bleeding. It absorbs shocks and vibrations.

Bitumen Mastic is used for industrial buildings, warehouses, grain storage structures, surfacing of bridge decks, roads, foot paths, LPG Bottling plants and as damp-proofing material for underground tanks, basements etc.

It is also used as a base Coat/underlay to receive floor coverings such as linoleum, flexible PVC Sheets, rubber, acid proof tiles, as covering of floors for electroplating shops, processing departments, chemicals, liquor wash sections, gutter and in fertilizer, rayon, diestuff or water treatment plants and other chemical factories where continuous or frequent contact with dilute effluents is expected.

The various ingredients depending upon the use of bitumen mastic are mixed and cooked in a mechanically agitated mixer called mastic cooker to get a homogeneous mass.

There are different types of bitumen mastic suitable for different purposes:

1. Bitumen Mastic for flooing - IS : 1195 - 1978.
2. Bitumen Mastic for Waterproofing of roofs - IS: 3037 - 1965.
3. Bitumen Mastic for bridge deck and roads - IS: 5317 - 1969.
4. Bitumen Mastic for tanking & damp-proofing - IS: 5871-1970.
5. Bitumen Mastic anti-static & electrically conducing grade - IS: 837 4-1977.
6. Bitumen Mastic-acid resistance grade - IS: 9510-1980.
7. Black pitch, mastic flooring (Oil resistant)
8. Bitumen Mastic for waterproofing and Protective coating for concrete slabs.

COLOURED BITUMEN MASTIC

In case coloured decorative floor finish is required Bitumen Mastic can be laid to give pleasing, decorative colol!Jred finish.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION & METHOD OF LAYING

Bitumen Mastic consists of Bitumen and suitably graded mineral matters. The exact chemical composition of Bitumen Mastic depends on the type of Bitumen Mastic required the climatic conditions of the place where mastic is required and its uses.

Bitumen Mastic is cooked in mechnically agitated Bitumen Mastic Cooker. The various ingredients such as mineral fillers and fine agreegates are heated in Mastic Cooker. Asphalt is heated separately to a temperature of 180°C and thereafter mixed with preheated ingredients in the cooker.

The various types of Bitumen Mastic are laid as per the code of practice specified in : IS: 1196 code of practice for laying Bitumen Mastic for flooring.

IS : 4365 code of practice for application of Bitumen Mastic for Waterproofing of roofs. IS: 7198 code of proctice for dampproofing using Bitumen Mastic.

REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE

Bitumen Mastic surface can be repaired easily by cutting the damaged portion and relaying the same with fresh Bitumen Mastic. In case the Bitumen Mastic is damaged much beyod repairs due to wear and tear, the mastic already laid can be removed, broken into pieces, reheated and relaid after adding the requisite quantity of Asphalt and agreegates.
